Drake Turns 17

It really is crazy just typing it out that Drake, my dude, turned 17 a couple weeks ago. I came into his life when he was 4 years old and spending the last decade+ growing a relationship together is something so special.

He's been asking for his room at our new(ish) house to be painted dark so while him and Andrew we're on a 24 hour road trip to Colorado buying a 1929 Ford hot rod - more on that later - I knew it was my chance to knock it out. They left at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon and I was in there by 6pm painting until 3am. Monday was decorating date and styling so when they got home at 8pm Monday evening, he walked into a brand new refreshed space he'd been asking.

He's had Beddy's for the last 4 years so it was a no brainer to stick to that and I got the Erin set and then pieced together a few throw blankets, pillow covers and I think it turned out so beautifully! It feels masculine and bold but of course, the material itself is just so cozy. Code AUBREY will get you 15% off anytime you shop at Beddy's.

Now for the paint detail, we used Sherwin Williams Greenblack in a satin finish. We actually had this leftover from painting our kitchen island and our outdoor kitchen so I just didn't want to spend anything more and use the resources I had on hand. What do you think? My goal was pulling in the dark he envisioned, a couple of his favorite artists with decor and plants to make it all pop. I'd say it was worth it and he was elated.

The Golden Birthday Surprise!

We did it!! Our guy turns 13 on Saturday and because he's with his mom on his actual birthday we decided to surprise him before he goes back. If you're unfamiliar, we share 50/50 with his mom so he's with us one week and then his mom one week and alternating back and forth. It's always worked well for us and gives him both homes to lean into and have double the family to love on him!

Because it's his 13th birthday AND his golden birthday, we really wanted to go big! We opted for redoing his whole bedroom to make it something more mature and functional for him to grow into over time. It will eliminate us having to redo it again in his later teenage years and a bigger bed was something we knew he wanted badly. We also surprised him with a family birthday party he knew nothing about! I took him out shopping for some extra details for his room at At Home and when we got back, everyone was there to surprise him - and it totally worked!!

He kept saying how special he felt and how surprised he was. I think it was a total success and I'm so happy he loved everything and how it came together. We worked with At Home and Beddy's on this space and they were both so kind to contribute to this special room for him! Honestly, I want this to be my bedroom!

The Ultimate Birthday Surprise!

I've been itching to get something realllly special going for our dude! He literally jumped into 7th grade 4 days ago and he will be turning 13 in a couple months and while we've always tailored his bedroom to be functional and classic - and boy - I feel like it's time to WOW him. A time to really make a statement and let him know how excited we are him journeying into his teen years and give him a space he's proud to call his.

Every time we've done any kind of updates throughout the house or when we move homes, he's been meticulous and so tuned in to all the details of each piece we use with decorating and it feels right designing a place all around him growing, developing, challenging, molding - into a young man!! Holy cow. I freaking blinked and he's 13!!

Do you remember when I came into his life at 4 years old through marriage? Four years old. I look back at pictures and can't even remember him being so small and baby-like. That's Emery's age in a couple months! I'm pumped to pull together this mood board of inspiration from Joss & Main creating a tailored, comfortable, and functional space for him!

He always has been vocal loving the black metal accents and blue we've used throughout our home so my goal is adding in the clean, simple lines while popping with warm tones. A fuzzy throw blanket, warm leather in a pouf and a bench and then of course, going overboard with throw pillows to make it that much more inviting. Add some industrial elements through the lamps for the nightstands and a statement piece of art and I can bet you he won't be leaving a space like this anytime soon.

So what do you think? Is it the ultimate 13th birthday surprise? I mean, we will totally be having a surprise birthday party, too, but this really start off the teen years with a bang! ;)

Preteens are hard. I can't tell if Drake will be in a good mood when he wakes up or as grumpy as they come. I don't know if he'll have a day at school respecting his teacher and abiding by all the rules or one he acts out and I get emails from the teacher. They're unpredictable and moody. I didn't think I'd have an emotional, puberty adjusting boy for a few more years but I think it's upon us.

Because of the constant guessing and weird phase of not quite being boy yet not quite being a teen stage, it was evident to me when we moved I really needed to adapt his bedroom to now being in middle school and something he could grow with. Neutral colors, simple design but functionality. A tall dresser to house his sports gear and folded clothing, a simple white desk to do homework at and spend time in his devotional, a large flag honoring our country and of course, greens! Anything to add some texture and dimension even with some layered rugs.

Overall, I love the vibe it sends when walking in. Not too stuffy or styled but simple enough he can maintain it and keep it organized and clean on a regular basis. You know, if he listens to me and does his chores. ;)
